Associate Diploma in Acting
Successful Learners have the right to append ANEA (Acting) after their names.
General Objectives
The Associate Diploma in Acting is designed to:
- provide a progressive training programme for actors
- provide professional development and specialised training for actors
- provide a standard of training that is recognised by wider agencies
- provide a relevant and challenging syllabus that encourages a high standard of knowledge, research and performance
Learning Outcomes
Learners should:
- demonstrate a professionally high standard of performance
- study all plays chosen in depth
- demonstrate a good background knowledge of drama through their programme selection
- demonstrate a full range of emotional and dramatic ability
- demonstrate well defined characterisation
- interpret the depth of character within the plot situation
- produce an original, resourceful, imaginative and well constructed improvisation
- be prepared and able to take redirection in any scene
- demonstrate the qualities necessary to be a successful actor
Learners for this must already have achieved the Grade 8 Acting examination.
Learners must be at least 17 years old.
The examination consists of:
- A practical session of approximately one hour’s duration at which two examiners are present
- There is no written paper
- 75 marks are required to pass
Learners must submit a clear copy of the 3 selections to be performed to the New Era Office with their Entry. This is to enable the examiners to have copies of the selections prior to the examination.
The Practical Examinations
Marks awarded at this level:
Stage Presence: 10 marks
Voice Production: 10 marks
Learners should:
- Present a programme of three contrasting scenes, each arranged for one character only from different periods. One scene should be in dialect. Time limit – 4 minutes for each scene (15 marks for each scene)
- Read at sight a speech from a play (10 marks)
- Perform an improvisation which will be set by the examiners at the time of the examination. Time will be given for preparation and 3 minutes for performance (10 marks)
- Take redirection on one of the pieces performed (5 marks)

Discuss in depth with the examiners:
- the pieces chosen
- the background, period and styles of their pieces
- knowledge of the plays from which their pieces are taken
- the technical and vocal skills required to perform effectively (10 marks)
