Associate Performer's Diploma in Public Speaking
Successful learners have the right to append ANEA (Public Speaking – Performer) after their names.
General Objectives
The Associate Performer’s Diploma in Public Speaking is designed to:
- provide a progressive training programme for public speakers
- provide professional development and specialised training for public speakers
- provide a standard of training that is recognised by wider agencies
- provide a relevant and challenging syllabus that encourages a high standard of knowledge, research and performance
Learning Outcomes
Learners should:
- demonstrate a professionally high standard of performance
- present performance programmes demonstrating a range of style and content
- have excellent communication skills
- demonstrate a high standard of practical techniques
- demonstrate effective, imaginative and persuasive speaking
- demonstrate a depth of preparation
- demonstrate the ability to speak confidently and professionally in any situation and to any type of audience
- demonstrate the qualities necessary to be a successful public speaker
Learners must already have achieved the Grade 8 (Public Speaking) examination.
Learners must be at least 18 years old to take the Performer’s Diploma in Public Speaking.
LEARNERS MUST STATE CLEARLY ON THEIR ENTRY FORM THAT THEY ARE ENTERING FOR THE PERFORMER’S DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC SPEAKING
The examination consists of:
- Section 1- A practical session of approximately one hour at which two examiners are present
- Section 2 - A written paper. Three hours are allowed for the working of the paper
- 75 marks are required to pass in both sections
Both Sections of this examination must be passed. In the event of failure to achieve the pass mark in one of the Sections, a re-take must be attempted within 2 years of the original entry date.
If success is not achieved within this time, the entire examination must be taken again.
The fee for each Section is paid on entry for that Section; if any Section is failed, a re-take fee is charged for each re-taken Section.
Preparation
- Specimen papers may be obtained from the New Era Office
- New Era offers a criticism service for completed practice papers giving feedback and advice. This service is provided for a small fee

Section 1 – The Practical
10 marks are awarded for Speech.
Learners must be prepared:

To deliver a speech on one of the following subjects:
- Chance encounters
- “No one gossips about other people’s secret virtues” (Bertrand Russell)
- Conversation, like letter writing, is a dying art
- “Spare the rod and spoil the child”(Proverbs). Time limit 15 minutes (30 marks)
- To give an impromptu speech of not more than 5 minutes on a subject handed to the learner during the examination. Allowance will be made for the learner to make a few brief notes (15 marks)
- To deliver a short speech on a subject of the learner’s own choice. Time limit 5 minutes (15 marks)
- To read at sight passages of prose and poetry (15 marks)

To discuss with the examiners:
- the aims of the performer in this subject
- the means whereby these aims may be achieved (15 marks)
Section 2 - The Written Paper
- Learners sit one paper for which 3 hours is allowed
- The paper must be worked in the same session as the practical examination (ie within 3 months)
- The completed paper will be marked by an examiner who was not present at the practical session. It will then be moderated by another examiner, and the Chief Examiner.
The paper comprises:
- 3 compulsoryquestions – each worth 16 marks
- A choice of 4 from 6 questions – each worth 13 marks

- resonance
- speech preparation and planning
- communication
- sources of reference
- vocabulary and other aspects of the subject as they apply to a public speaker
