Speech and Drama - Level 3 - Advanced

Learning Outcomes

Learners should:

  • present work of a standard suitable for a public audience
  • select appropriate material
  • discuss theory in detail
  • converse fluently with ease and clarity
  • offer opinions of their own
  • demonstrate a depth of literary knowledge and appreciation
  • perform work that is of high quality both technically and artistically
 
Grade 6 Bronze Medal (20 Minutes)

Marks awarded at this grade include:
Speech: 25 marks

Learners should:

  • Perform from memory one of the following:
    • a scene arranged for one character from a play written before 1960
    • a passage of prose taken from any book written after 1850. Time limit 3 minutes (20 marks)
  • Perform from memory a poem written by any Elizabethan or Jacobean poet. Time limit 3 minutes (20 marks)
  • Read at sight a passage of prose or verse selected by the examiner (15 marks)
  • Discuss with the examiner:
    • the pieces and authors chosen
    • the formation of vowel sounds
    • the neutral vowel
    • the formation of consonant sounds (20 marks)
 
Grade 7 Silver Medal (30 Minutes)

Marks awarded at this grade include:
Speech: 10 marks

Learners should:

  • Perform from memory a scene arranged for one character from a play written by a contemporary playwright. Time limit 3 minutes (15marks)
  • Perform from memory a passage of prose taken from any book written by Charles Dickens. Time limit 3 minutes (15 marks)
  • Perform from memory a poem (or part of a longer poem) written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson or Seamus Heaney. Time limit 3 minutes (15 marks)
  • Read at sight a passage of prose or verse selected by the examiner (10 marks)
  • Give a presentation on the pieces and authors chosen. Time limit 3 minutes (15 marks)
  • Discuss with the examiner:
    • the metres of English poetry
    • rhythm
    • verse forms (20 marks)
 
Grade 8 Gold Medal (45 Minutes)

Marks awarded at this grade include:
Speech: 10 marks

Learners should:

  • Perform from memory a scene arranged for one character from a play of their own choice. Time limit 3 minutes (15marks)
  • Perform from memory a passage of prose taken from a book of their own choice. Time limit 3 minutes (15 marks)
  • Perform from memory a poem of their own choice. Time limit 3 minutes (15 marks)
  • Read at sight a passage of prose or verse selected by the examiner (10 marks)
  • Give a presentation on drama, poetry and literature of the period from which one of their chosen selections is taken. Time limit 5 minutes (15 marks)
  • Discuss with the examiner:
    • any matters arising from their presentation
    • the pieces chosen
    • aspects of technique
    • the history of poetry, literature and drama from the Elizabethan period up to the present day (20 marks)
