ASSOCIATE DIPLOMA IN MUSICAL THEATRE
Successful
Learners have the right to append ANEA (Musical Theatre) after their names.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The Associate
Diploma in Musical Theatre is designed to:
- provide a
progressive training programme for actors and singers
- provide
professional development and specialised training for performers in musical
theatre
- provide a
standard of training that is recognised by wider agencies
- provide a
relevant and challenging syllabus that encourages a high standard of
knowledge, research and performance
LEARNING
OUTCOMES:
Learners
should:

demonstrate a professionally high standard of performance
- present a
technically and artistically accomplished programme of professional quality
and versatility

demonstrate a broad, enthusiastic and well researched knowledge of musical
theatre, including its history and development

demonstrate a full range of emotional, dramatic and musical ability

demonstrate well defined characterisation
- produce an
original, resourceful, imaginative and well constructed improvisation
-
demonstrate the qualities necessary to be a successful performer in musical
theatre
Learners for
this examination must already have achieved the Grade 8 Musical Theatre
examination.
Learners must
be at least 17 years old.
The examination
consists of:
- A
practical session of approximately one hour’s duration at which two
examiners are present.
- There is
no written paper
- 75
marks are required to pass
Learners
must submit a clear copy of the 4 selections to be performed to the New Era
Office with their Entry. This is to enable the examiners to have copies of the
selections prior to the examination.
THE
PRACTICAL EXAMINATION
Marks awarded at this level include:
Stage Presence 10 marks
Vocal Production 10 marks
Learners
should:

Perform a
short scene in character leading to a song of the learner's own choice from
any musical by Boublil and Schoenberg.
(15 marks)

Perform a
contrasting song of the learner's own choice by Jerome
Kern.
(10 marks)

Perform a
comedy song by Jerry Herman or Frank Loesser.
(10 marks)

Perform a
contrasting song of the learner's own choice.
(10 marks)

Read at
sight (not sing) a song lyric given to them by the examiner, then perform
and interpret the content as an acted piece. A short time will be allowed
for preparation.
(10 marks)

Perform a short
acting improvisation, suggested by the lyrics or situation of one or the
selections, which will be given by the examiner in the examination room. A
short time will be allowed for preparation.
(10 marks)

Discuss
in depth with the examiners:

TWO ground
breaking musicals from different decades of their own choice
·
the
comparison and contrast of their construction, musical style and staging
·
how these
musicals reflected and/or influenced the social and political situation of their
eras
·
their effect
on the progress of Musical Theatre
·
the technical
and vocal skills required to perform effectively
